The tramway project is now moving on to the next phase. For NYAB-AZVI AB, this means that the planning will be translated into a multi-year construction contract covering approximately 17 km of double track, 22 tram stops, bridges and associated infrastructure along the route.

“We are delighted that Uppsala Municipality has continued to place its trust in us to carry out the project together. The scale and complexity of the project place high demands on close collaboration between all parties involved. The shared experience gained during Phase 1 provides us with a strong foundation as we now move on to the production phase,” says Johan Skoog, Business Area Manager at NYAB and a representative on the NYAB-AZVI AB steering group.

Antonio Mora, Director of Europe at AZVI and a representative on the NYAB-AZVI AB steering group, highlights the importance of the project as it moves into implementation: “The tramway is a key project for the future development of the city and its public transport system. As the project moves into implementation, we bring experience from large and complex tramway projects and look forward to contributing our expertise in close collaboration with Uppsala Municipality, Region Uppsala, NYAB and the wider project organisation.”

The project is being carried out as a collaborative venture with Uppsala Municipality, Region Uppsala and a broad network of contractors, suppliers and partners.

Preparations are now beginning for the production activities work that will shape large parts of Uppsala over the coming years. The initial work involves establishing work sites, preparing detailed design documentation, and planning logistics and resources.

While the design work for Phase 2 is getting underway, time-critical works have already started in 2026. Once the construction drawings are finalised, the conditions will be in place to gradually ramp up production activities along the route.

”Uppsala Tramway is an urban regeneration project that will have a noticeable impact across large parts of the city. A significant part of the work involves striking the right balance between efficient production, coordination and ensuring the city continues to function throughout the construction period,” says Victor Tanndal, Project Director for the Uppsala Tramway at NYAB-AZVI AB.

Production activities will gradually increase along the route and will continue for several years in various parts of Uppsala. The project is being carried out in two phases, with the first section scheduled for completion in 2032, after which it will be ready for commercial service, while the final phase will be completed in 2034, when the tramway will be connected to Bergsbrunna.
